St Louis Blues was composed by W. C. Handy and published in September 1914. It’s a fundamental part of jazz musicians’ repertoire. It was also one of the first blues songs to succeed as a pop song. It has been performed by numerous musicians in various styles, from Louis Armstrong and Bessie Smith (see above video) to Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Guy Lombardo, and the Boston Pops Orchestra. It has been called “the jazzman’s Hamlet”.

Cincinnati Flow Rag (sometimes called Slow Drag) was written by the legendary Rev Gary Davis and featured on an album called The Guitar & Banjo of Reverend Gary Davis. Cincinnati Flow Rag is a real grandstand piece of ragtime in the key of C, as most rags are. The tune revolves round G and C with a connecting turnaround. It’s a testament to the skill of Gary Davis that he managed to pour so much invention and ingenuity into this apparently simple structure. It’s quite a long piece, but Rick Payne goes through it in a methodical way and guides you every step of the way.
